Event Overview: Lloyd Godson is an ambassador for ocean exploration committed to encouraging more young Australians to undertake STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) studies and careers. He is also no stranger to marine expeditions. He has spent a total of one month living underwater, propelled himself through the Greek islands in a human-powered submarine and holds the Guinness World Records for the most electricity generated by pedalling underwater. In 2007, Lloyd received the coveted Australian Geographic Adventurer of the Year award. He’s also explored the deep sea on board the E/V Nautilus; an expedition vessel operated by Dr Robert Ballard (discoverer of the Titanic) and his Ocean Exploration Trust.

In November 2017, Lloyd will join the Great Barrier Reef Legacy on their search for the Super Corals! The research vessel and team will travel from Port Douglas to Cape York over three weeks in the most hard hit section of the Marine Park to allow access for leading scientists to search for the reef’s Super Corals, and report on overall coral and reef health. Of particular interest will be shallow reef lagoons that exhibit higher than normal water temperature on a regular basis as it is expected these will contain a greater diversity and abundance of Super Corals than anywhere else. In addition, the GBR Legacy on-board research team will collect visual data with drones and underwater 4K and 360 cameras to create a permanent record of Reef health that can be accessed by any researchers around the world to make their own assessments, and allow for the widespread sharing of information.

Join Lloyd to learn how students and teachers from all over the world can learn of the research being conducted on-board the vessel in a series of videos, blogs, interviews and interactive web-sessions!

The Australian National Maritime Museum is excited to welcome Lloyd back to share his amazing scientific adventures for another in the engaging Inspiring Stories series.
