Event Overview: Guided Reading Workshop
PART 1: Thursday 13 August 3.00pm - 4.00pm
PART 2: Thursday 20 August 3.00pm - 4.00pm

These two one-hour sessions will involve a close look at the role of instructional reading in the reading hour.
We will also explore the setting up the classroom for success and implementing purposeful activities for the class while the teacher works with a small group

Guided Reading will be defined and demonstrated.

Guided Reading is most effective when:
- texts are selected at an instructional level based on effective assessment
- good quality texts are selected and
- teaching outcomes are made explicit regarding teacher preparation

In addition, the use of alternative small group instructional reading strategies- Reciprocal Reading, Literature Circles - within a balanced reading program will be described.

The second hour (Thursday 20 August 3.00pm-4.00pm) will explain how to incorporate the use of effective comprehension strategies before reading, during reading and after reading, in order that the teacher can facilitate the small group instructional sessions for maximum benefit. This session will explain how to set up the classroom for success and answer the question, “What are the others doing?” while the teacher works with a small group.

A single representative from a school may book on behalf of a group of teachers. Please indicate the number of teachers who will be participating and the year levels they represent.

Further Information: These professional development workshops on Guided Reading, Part 1 and Part 2 are recommended by the Australian Literacy Educators Association (ALEA).

The presenter, Wendy Bean, a former teacher in NSW public schools, is now an education consultant working nationally and internationally. She regularly works in schools with the aim of supporting positive changes in student outcomes.

Wendy lectured in the post graduate program for the University of Wollongong and has worked on many national government education projects including National Literacy and Numeracy Week and has designed and implemented a range of professional development courses for systems and schools. In 2014 Wendy worked on the CAL initiative, Reading Australia.

She is an active member of the Australian Literacy Educators’ Association (ALEA). In 2014 she received the ALEA Medal.

Wendy regularly presents at local, national and international conferences and has written several books for teachers.
