Milk bottle Origami

Join well known artist Jane Gillings for an afternoon in her studio and a  LIVE sculpture making workshop.

The afternoon will start with a short presentation of  her work and the work of some other artists  exhibited in  this year’s Sculpture by the Sea Bondi 2019.

Explore her studio LIVE – watch her demonstrate ways to transform a plastic milk bottle – make your own wearable sculpture.

Jane’s practice as an artist uses discarded everyday objects and materials to create sculpture. Her most recent commission is a flock of birds made from reused plastic spoons and packaging strapping which will be installed in Melbourne Zoo.

The afternoon will start with a short presentation of  her work and the work of some other artists  exhibited in  this year’s Sculpture by the Sea Bondi 2019. Jane’s work ‘A Choir’ is an installation of discarded pedestal fans. It is exhibited along with 110 other sculptures by Australian and International artists along the Bondi to Tamarama coastal walk during Sculpture by the Sea - a once a year free public exhibition.

Further Information

    • Milk bottle origami will introduce students to how everyday objects can be reused to create something else. Jane will show students how they can make an awesome mask using cutting and folding techniques with a milk bottle.

Each student will need a 2Litre milk bottle, scissors and crayons or Posca pens.

Teachers might also like to consider and discuss:  What is a mask? When do we wear them and why? How are masks used in other cultures, in religion, performance and ceremony? Find examples.

Write a poem or story about ‘The many masks we wear’.
